Sore Throat Pain Relief

There are many ways to soothe sore throat pain. Cough drops, throat lozenges, and sprays often provide relief. Rinses such as salt water, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar or mouthwash also bring satisfying results. However, a friend recently introduced me to the fastest sore throat remedy I have ever tried.

Sore throats can be scratchy or achy. They can be caused by swollen glands, nasal drip or any number of germ related maladies. When we are suffering from a sore throat we care very little about its origins. We simply want relief, and we want it quickly. However, understanding the cause of the pain helps in choosing the remedy to soothe it.

Cough drops, lozenges and sprays cover and protect the irritated and painful area of the throat. Many also contain a topical analgesic which temporarily relieves pain. This protection gives your body a chance to heal some of the damage caused by irritation from allergies, chemicals, or other foreign substances.

During cold weather sore throats are usually caused by germs and bacteria. Rinses such as Listerine kill these invaders and attack the cause of the sore throat. So, gargle with germ killing Listerine. Germs gone. Pain gone. Right? Not exactly.

Sufferers want instant relief. By combining two powerful germ-fighting rinses, Listerine and hydrogen peroxide, sore throat pain and its culprits are quickly eliminated. Hard to believe? I agree. I was skeptical until pain drove me to try the last sore throat remedy I know.

The Remedy
Mix equal parts of Listerine, (or your favorite mouthwash) and hydrogen peroxide. Gargle 15 seconds with mixture. Repeat at least twice. Do not rinse with water. Experience the unbelievable instant relief. I rinse once in the morning, and once before bed.

The Warning
As with any remedy consult your physician before using. Also consult your physician if your sore throat is accompanied by high fever, rash, or white or yellow blisters. Do not use hydrogen peroxide in the mouth when cavities or tooth decay are present. The peroxide may bubble inside the cavity causing or intensifying pain.

The Theory
I have used Listerine to facilitate the healing of a sore throat, but it seldom soothed the pain. The same applies to hydrogen peroxide. Upon mixing the two I found my sore throat pain greatly diminished. The reasons may be two fold.

Listerine kills germs. Hydrogen peroxide kills germs. Maybe they kill germs in different ways and the combination of two germ fighters kills double the germs.

Listerine is strong and users often dilute it with water diminishing its strength. Peroxide is bubbly and often diluted by water producing the same diminished strength. When the two are diluted with each other their strength is doubled, not diminished. Also the peroxide in the mixture retains some of its bubbly nature and carries the Listerine to areas of the throat it normally would not reach.

Congratulations on a healthy germ reduced orifice!

The following steps will help prevent re-infection.
